A story I read right out of college, was of the Original Buddha collecting alms, and he comes to a door. A man hurriedly tries to get Buddha to come in, exclaiming to the Buddha: “there’s a serial killer roaming the forest, you must stay!” Buddha replied non-agitatedly, “I will be fine, I will go.” Buddha then goes back into the forest and encounters the serial killer. The serial killer was about to cut the Buddha with a knife when suddenly he couldn’t do it. He had seen the serenity, the peace in Buddha’s eyes and demeanor. He wept at Buddha’s feet. It is said that the serial killer followed the spiritual path the remainder of his life and became enlightened. I think it is an inspiring story because it shows the possibility of redemption. No fate is sealed, no matter how depraved the mind. Culture breeds violence—remove the cultural influences and one has a fresh; holy perspective. We must never give up on the rehabilitation of any person! Point and let them foster!
